Celebrate World Food Day in Beeston Hill

You are invited to come and join the Beeston Hill Community Association (BHCA), to celebrate World Food Day this Saturday (17 October 2026) at Beeston Hill United Free Church on Malvern Road.

Food will be served from 1-3pm, but the event will run until 4pm. There will be delicious home cooked dishes and desserts from different cultures found right here in Beeston Hill. This free, family friendly event is a great way to spend an afternoon – getting to know new people, learn about different nationalities whilst sharing food and stories.

The BHCA hosted a similar event last year – it was a simple but lovely gathering with around 100 people attending. There were all sorts of different foods, dancing and laughter. One resident said;

“It was so nice to be able to meet people who attended from many other nationalities who either cooked for us or came down to join us and be able to sample some of their national dishes that they were deservingly proud of.”

This event shows what the BHCA is about – to celebrate what is strong in our community, not simply focus on what is wrong. We know there are many of ongoing problems in our area that provide real challenges for local residents. Some of these issues will not be easily or quickly resolved but by creating opportunities to bring different people to come together and create positive connections, it builds potential to for collective action.

When people start to get to know one another, we believe it’s possible to work together to speak up for the area and bring about change. Taking time to get to know neighbours, especially when they are different to you, is so valuable. At a time when we see division in our nation and our world; where people often see difference rather than similarities, events like this, enable people from different cultures and communities to sit down together, share delicious food and build relationships. It seems so simple, but is so powerful. Why not come along and see for yourself!

The BHCA hosts a community meeting every two months at Building Blocks Centre on Maud Avenue, just off Tempest Road. Our next meeting is on Monday 30 November at 6:30-8pm – if you live in the area and want to make our community better, we would love to have you involved.

Our meetings are informal and relaxed and are an opportunity to get to know neighbours, share their views on community life and be heard. We always have free food together, everyone is welcome. Our Hunslet & Riverside Councillors (and when possible, local PSCOs/police) attend meetings, so it is also a good chance to share any concerns and have questions answered. We hope you can join us.
