Several ash trees in Cross Flatts Park have been felled over the years because of ash dieback, a serious fungal disease caused by Hymenoscyphus fraxineus.
As we reported here, in 2024 Friends of Cross Flatts Park, and Honorary Alderwoman Angela Gabriel BEM in particular, raised funds to turn one of the cut down trees into the sculpture we see and love today.
Councillors Andrew Scopes (Labour, Beeston & Holbeck) and Paul Wray (Labour, Hunslet & Riverside) joined Honorary Alderwoman Angela Gabriel BEM this year to help preserve Cross Flatts Park’s tree sculpture by treating it with teak oil.
Cllr Andrew Scopes said:
“The tree sculpture is such an important centrepiece in the park and I hope it remains healthy for many years to come.”
