Alisia Casper and her show Homolonius II – Lost In General is the latest exhibition at Basement Arts Project, Leeds’ smallest art gallery.
Bruce and Debs Davies have turned the cellar of their terraced house into an arts space. Alisia Casper is a prolific artist, so on this occasion the pictures spill into the living room.
Trying to describe Casper’s style is very difficult, but I’ll try to give you some of her flavours. There is childlike quality to the drawings many of which are of fabulous beasts. My other Half said they reminded her of the Meg and Mog children’s books, a comment that the artist took as a compliment.
The drawings are playful. Faces appear on stomachs or feet as well as heads. Look closer and you discover that those aren’t feet, they’re a bird or a fish. One of those ants is a boy in an ant suit.
There is melancholy in the pictures too. The sadness in some of the faces is almost too much to bear. I wasn’t surprised therefore to discover that Alisia Casper has suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome.
This exhibition is well worth seeing. If I haven’t sold the artist to you, go and see it to support Bruce and Debs great initiative to host art events in Beeston.
The show is open on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th from 2-4pm. For details email: basementartsproject@gmail.com.
