Boxer praises Golden Team gym for turning his life around

Inner city boxing clubs have long provided a focus for young men keen to better themselves and show what they’re made of and now in 2024 Golden Team gym in Hunslet continues to perform this role with boxer Ryan Winstanley grateful to the club and coach Justin Newell.

“I’ve been training at Golden Team for two years and have won seven bouts including five at charity events and two as a boxer on local unlicensed shows. I’m looking forward to my next bout on Holmes Promotions in Morley on Friday 31 May 2024 as I’ll be able to show what I’ve mastered in the gym. Having a bout lined up helps me keep focused.”

Thirty-one-year-old Winstanley explained that he “started boxing with Justin just to change my life. I needed help as I was in bad way drinking far too much and taking drugs going without sleep for days. I’d struggled as a child with my mum fighting a drug addiction and she passed away the day before my sixteenth birthday. I’m energetic, an up to anything person with ADHD. A typical lad with the condition. Boxing’s given me the focus to help change my life around and it’s all thanks to Justin and Golden Team. Boxing makes me feel good, but I don’t like waking up the morning after a tough training session” chuckled Winstanley.

Winstanley, whose favourite boxer is Carl The Cobra Froch, is proud to have acquired four sponsors including Walsh Clothing, Nealon Decorators, TK Balloons & Personalisation and Mr Joinery.

“I aim to make them proud with another win on Friday next.”
