Cllr Mohammed Iqbal and Cllr Paul Wray (Labour, Hunslet & Riverside) have announced a review of grit bin collections across the Hunslet and Beeston areas of their ward as part of a drive to reduce avoidable trips and falls during icy weather.
Cllr Mohammed Iqbal said:
“Paul and I are very concerned that there are areas of the ward not covered by gritting routes, which become very icy and pose a risk to many residents falling.
“We’ve asked Housing Leeds officers to review the areas managed by them, but we’re also asking residents in other areas of the ward, not managed by Housing Leeds, to suggest locations for us to consider as well.
“We want to make sure we have a good level of coverage across the ward.”
For residents outside of Housing Leeds areas – suggested locations would need to be assessed to ensure the location would not cause a footpath obstruction. Each grit bin would also need a resident or business to agree to be its caretaker – informing the Council when it needs to be refilled.

Cllr Iqbal and Wray are keen for the review be completed by mid-December, so orders for the grit bins can be placed as soon as possible.
