Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.
We start this week on Saturday evening at The Holbeck with Slung Low presenting ‘Destiny’ at 7:30pm. A “captivating” show that follows a teenage girl growing up on a Chippenham council estate. Born below the breadline, she’s desperate to see beyond the neighbourhood and find hope in hopelessness. Content warning: the show talks about sexual abuse, violence, neglect and abuses of power.
On Sunday morning Leeds Dads are offering free tea and toast at their free Soft Play session, 10am-12pm at Little Angels Playzone, off Dewsbury Road near the Tommy Wass pub. A great event for dads and their pre school children.
On Sunday David Oluwale’s Blue Plaque will be reinstated on Leeds Bridge at 1pm. The event will be followed by speeches, poetry, music and Nigerian food at The Tetley art gallery nearby. The event is free but you must book here
Sheaf Street Café off Crown Point Road in Hunslet, is hosting a clothes swap on Sunday 12-4pm, organised by Good On You. As well as saving money and waste, all money raised from this event will be donated to Apna Haq – supporting Black and minority ethnic (BME) women and girls in Rotherham, South Yorkshire who are experiencing any form of violence, including domestic violence.
Leeds United entertain Fulham on Sunday, kick off 2pm. Expect the usual heavy traffic around Beeston before and after the game.
Sunday is also Apple Pressing Day in Middleton Park. The Friends will have an Apple Crusher and Press – so bring along your apples (or pears) to press them into wonderfull fresh apple juice. Remember to bring a bottle so you can take your juice home. There will be some apples around so everyone can help crush and press and enjoy drinking some of the juice. Plus Apple-Themed childrens arts, crafts and Facepainting. Middleton Park Visitor Centre, 2-4pm.
New women-only swimming sessions have started at the John Charles Aquatics Centre, Middleton Grove. They are every Tuesday and Thursday, 1-2pm, and are supported poolside by Leeds Girls Can ambassador Naz.
Drink & Draw, Wednesday 6:30-8pm, is a monthly event in the Bar area of The Tetley art gallery, Hunslet Road, LS10 1JQ. It’s a live drawing event, inviting you to get creative in a relaxed, sociable atmosphere. This event is intended for adults. No previous experience is required, and all materials are provided. Booking required
It’s back to The Holbeck on Friday evening for Hot In Here (an energy generating dance party), 7:30pm. This protest theatre show has been developed from interviews with climate advocates around the world and powered by an energy-harvesting dancefloor, Hot In Here celebrates action taking place internationally against climate injustice, and the UK’s place within it.
