Our friends at South Leeds Community Radio (SLCR) have been in touch to tell us about what they get up to.
There’s an old saying that goes along the lines of ‘Radio is like TV, but the pictures are better on the radio’, a sentiment we certainly wouldn’t disagree with here at SLCR.
It’s been a busy year for us: training volunteers, running courses in conjunction with our friends at Vera Media and you might even have seen our Roadshow at an event or two this summer. But most of all we’ve been making radio programmes, and some brilliant ones at that. Now that might sound like we’re blowing our own trumpet a little, but nothing could be further from the truth. The programmes are so good because the people who make them – the reporters, presenters and technical staff – are drawn from the vast pool of talent that is South Leeds.
What sort of programming can you expect to hear on South Leeds Community Radio? There’s as wide a variety as you’d expect, representing the rich diversity of the area. We have community language broadcasts, arts, drama, documentaries and a wide variety of music programming. SLCR also has a weekly show made by and for the LGBT community, and a local policing/community safety programme presented by our friends at the Holbeck Neighbourhood Policing Team. In addition to this we make shows broadcasting a wealth of information: employment, training and leisure opportunities, health and wellbeing, as well as information for people with a visual impairment.

As well as allowing you to listen in, the website gives you access to our full programme guide, and lets you download some shows as podcasts if you missed them first time round. You can also find out what training courses are currently being run at the station, what events SLCR will be attending and how to get in touch with us.
There are lots of ways to get involved with South Leeds Community Radio, ranging from acting in one of our drama productions to becoming a community reporter and making programmes about life in our area. We also have opportunities for technical volunteers who are more interested in working ‘behind the scenes’, or you might just be keen to attend one of our courses and learn a bit more about the fascinating world of radio.
