St Luke’s CARES is an organisation that loves to share its success. Having handed out two rounds of community grants, it has now decided to give groups the chance to take over its charity shop for a day and go home with that day’s takings.
Monday 8 July saw a group of women from the Womanhood Culture Art project take the reins at the Dewsbury Road shop. Culture Art brings women from different communities of Beeston to share their culture (including food). The group meet each Thursday at the KMWA Centre on Hardy Street and new members are always welcome. The aim of the project is to break down barriers and help people mix, by educating each other.
The group won initial funding from Touchstone’s U Choose programme, but found that room hire soon ate up that grant so were looking for further funds to keep the project going.
“It’s been good because people coming into the shop have been asking and learning. It’s raised our profile just from us being here.”
“We are going to continue to help in here after today as volunteers.” added Sister Tracey.
Shop manager Sally Thums said:
“It’s fantastic having the ladies here, they’re all really lovely and kind. It’s really interesting to learn about different communities and what they do in their group.”
With the shop selling a huge range of goods including furniture, electrical items, clothing and household goods, Womanhood left with over £1,000.
