Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.
We start with the Volunteers who will be meeting at 10am on Saturday at Hunslet Cemetery, Middleton Road, to carry out various tidying up activities. New people are always welcome and equipment is provided.
The Church of the Nazarene host a coffee morning with affordable breakfast on Saturday morning, 10am-12pm. Lupton Street, Hunslet, LS10 2QR.
Beeston Hill Community Association has organised a Christmas Market at Rowland Road Club on Saturday from 12-5pm. There will be food, crafts, children’s activities and more.
Pyramid’s Winter Art Market takes place on Saturday from 11am-3pm at the Pyramid Studio in Holbeck(Unit 3, 18 Croydon Street, LS11 9RT). This is a free event, and they’ll be serving sweet treats and hot cocoa as well as running a family-friendly workshop to get you in the festive spirit. Stalls feature artwork from local makers and a fundraising stall for Pyramid where all money raised will go towards improving access and inclusion in the arts for people with learning disabilities.
Insight – Mental Health Peer Support Group are holding a Fundraising Christmas Fair at the Involve community centre, Whitfield Avenue, Hunslet LS10 2QE from 2-5pm.
Leeds United have two home games this week. On Saturday they take on Derby County, kicking off at 12:30pm, then on Tuesday night they face Middlesbrough with an 8pm kick-off. You can expect the usual heavy traffic and parking issues around Beeston, Holbeck and Cottingley before and after each match.
The Hunslet Rogues perform Mama Mia over two nights at The Hunslet Club. The shows are at 7pm on Saturday and 4pm on Sunday. Go to hunsletclub.org.uk for tickets.
Sunday sees the monthly Farmers Market running from 10am-4pm with lots of good food straight from the producers, at Armouries Square, Leeds Dock, LS10 1LT.
If you’re in Middleton Park on Sunday watch out for runners. The Bah Humbug 10k trail race starts and ends on the track at South Leeds Stadium having worked its way around the park. The race is organised by South Leeds Lakers running club and raises funds for their free junior sessions.
Join the Friends of Middleton Park for an afternoon of Christmas crafting and sing some Christmas songs. There will be hot drinks and home made cakes at Middleton Park Visitor Centre, by the lake, on Sunday from 1-3pm.
On Sunday the Leeds Knights take on the Swindon Wildcats. The ice hockey match faces off at 5:15pm at Planet Ice on Elland Road.
There are a number of Covid and Flu vaccination drop-in sessions this week. These are for eligible groups including those over 65 years or with various health issues. The clinics run on Monday at Hunslet Library and Hub, Waterloo Road, LS10 2NS; Wednesday at St George’s Centre, Middleton, LS10 4UZ; and Thursday 9am-5pm at Beeston Library and Hub, Town Street, LS11 8PN. All sessions run from 9am-5pm, no appointment is needed.
The public enquiry into the closure of the cobbled footpath by Cockburn School takes place on Tuesday at the Carriageworks Theatre on Millennium Square in the city centre, starting at 10am.
There are a host of Police Contact Points this week. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting. On Tuesday they will be at Hunslet Community Hub & Library from 10am-12pm. On Wednesday they are at Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library, 10am-12pm and outside St Matthew’s Community Centre on Holbeck Moor Road from 10:30am-12pm. Finally they will be at Beeston Community Hub & Library on Town Street on Thursday 10am-12pm.
A new support group for women going through the menopause holds its first drop-in session on Tuesday evening, 7-8pm at Hamara Healthy Living Centre, tempest Road, Beeston, LS11 6RD. Women can receive information, support, some freebies, and the chance to make new friends in a safe and confidential supportive environment. Refreshments will be provided.
Once again Beeston in Bloom has teamed up with St Mary’s Church to hold a Christmas Tree Festival. More than twenty local organisations have decorared a tree to reflect their work and the church will be open for you to view them on Wednesday 10:30am-12:30pm; Thursday 2:30-4:30pm; Friday 2:30-4:30pm; and Saturday 10am-12pm.
Holbeck Together host a Wellbeing Breakfast on Thursday morning, 10-11am at St Matthew’s Community Centre, LS11 9NR.
On Friday it’s the annual Christmas Lantern Festival. The festival starts with activities, music and donkeys at 4:15pm at St Mary’s Church, St Luke’s Church and Rowland Road Club. You can then process to Cross Flatts Park for choirs, brass bands, carol singing, farmyard animals and hot food from 5:30pm … oh and thousands of lights.
And finally, Lofthouse Brass Band will be performing at their new home, Belle Isle WMC, LS10 3PE, in a charity fundraising concert on Friday starting at 7:30pm.
