Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.
We start this week at Hunslet Cemetery where the volunteers will be meeting at 10am to carry out various tidying up activities. New people are always welcome and equipment is provided.
Middleton Railway holds it Autumn Gala this weekend with extra locomotives in action. There’s even an opportunity to ride in the guards’ van on a good train. The railway is open from 9am-5pm each day.
The regular coffee morning with affordable breakfast takes place at the Church of The Nazarene on Saturday, 10am-12pm, Lupton Street in Hunslet.
There’s a Macmillan Coffee Afternoon, Saturday 2:30-4:30pm, at St Andrew’s Community Centre, Old Lane, Beeston, LS11 8AL.
South Leeds FC will be playing Wakefield at South Leeds Stadium, Middleton Grove, LS11 5DJ, kicking off at 3pm.
The Lions of Rotherham is a play about the International Brigades who fought in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. It’s at The Holbeck club, Jenkinson Lawn, LS11 9QX, on Saturday at 7pm.
On Sunday the Leeds Knights take on the Solway Sharks. The ice hockey match faces off at 5:15pm at Planet Ice on Elland Road.
As it’s the first week of October there are a couple of residents meetings taking place, starting with Middleton Community Group which meets on Monday, 6-7pm, at the Middleton Elderly Aid Social Centre, Acre Road, LS10 4LF.
Also on Monday, the Greenmounts & Surrounding Area Tenants & Residents Association meets at 6:30pm at Rowland Road Working Men’s Club, LS11 6ED.
There are also a host of Police Contact Points this week. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting. On Tuesday they will be at Hunslet Community Hub & Library from and in the central atrium at White Rose Shopping Centre, both 10am-12pm. On Wednesday they are at Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library, 10am-12pm and outside St Matthew’s Community Centre on Holbeck Moor Road from 10:30am-12pm. Finally they will be at Beeston Community Hub & Library on Town Street on Thursday 10am-12pm.
The Library Story Bus will be pulling in to BITMO’s GATE for Story & Rhyme Time on Tuesday 10:30am-12pm. BITMOs GATE is on Aberfield Gate, off Belle Isle Road, LS10 3QH.
On Wednesday the Middleton Life History Group meets at 10am at the United Reformed Church, Nesfield Road, Belle Isle.
South Bank Sanctuary (formerly the Church of the Nazarene) on Hunslet Hall Road in Beeston have two new regular activities starting this week. Little Lighthouse is a pre-school playgroup with toys, songs, stories, snacks and hot drinks, every Wednesday 10:30am-12:30pm. Then on Thursdays from 6-8pm there’s Sanctuary Youth – a space for young people in secondary school to play table tennis, pool and video games.
A new free music course is starting on Wednesday. Can You Hear Me Holbeck? is organised by Vera Media and runs at Old Chapel Studios.
The Holbeck Community Roadshow is on Thursday, 9:30am-12pm St Matthew’s Community Centre (LS11 9NR). This is a chance to find out about a range of services serving the local community.
Pyramid’s Take A Seat exhibition has a special opening event from 6:30-8:30pm on Thursday at Seagulls, 129 Water Lane, Holbeck, LS11 9UD.
And finally, MHA South Leeds are holding a Race Night on Friday, 7-10pm at South Leeds Conservative Club, Wooler Street, Beeston.
