What’s On Roundup 3-9 August 2024

Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.

We start this week at Middleton Railway which is hosting a food and drink festival this weekend. Called A Taste of Yorkshire, the two-day event will celebrate the very best regional favourites and local produce. Hot and cold food will be available to buy on site all weekend as well as goodies to take home. Local breweries, a cider bar and cocktail bar are all attending. There will also be live music and children’s entertainment, plus trains of course. Saturday 10am-10pm, Sunday 10am-5pm, Middleton Railway is located on Moor Road, Hunslet, LS10 2JQ. Join the volunteers tidying up Hunslet Cemetery on Saturday morning from 10am, meet at the entrance on Middleton Road, equipment provided.

Hunslet Nelson Cricket Club’s Second XI take on Keighley CC on Saturday at Gipsy Lane, Beeston, LS11 5TT starting at 12:30pm. Then the Sunday First XI entertain Morley CC on Wednesday evening from 6pm.

Hunslet ARLFC entertain York Acorn on Saturday afternoon at The Oval, opposite Morrisons. Kick off is at 2:30pm.

South Leeds FC play Glasshoughton Welfare FC at their new home of South Leeds Stadium on Saturday at 3pm. The semi professional club, formerly Middleton FC, compete in the Northern Counties East Division 1 on the sixth step of the football pyramid.

Also on Saturday afternoon another local football team, Leeds United, entertain Valencia at Elland Road in a pre-season friendly. Kick-off is at 3pm and you can expect the usual heavy traffic and parking issues around Beeston, Holbeck and Cottingley.

Friend’s of Middleton Park stage their own music festival on Sunday with Middleton’s Got Talent. It all takes place on the bandstand by the visitor centre from 12-4pm.

Yorkshire Contemporary (the new name for The Tetley) start their free Art Play Food sessions in Cross Flatts Park (near the sports courts) on Monday. Perfect for children aged 5–11, this free programme invites you to make, build and eat together outdoors as part of a series of artist designed activities. Sessions will run Monday-Thursday, 11am-4pm for four weeks from 5-29 August. There’s no need to book, just drop in and join in.

There are also a host of Police Contact Points this week. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting. On Tuesday they will be at Hunslet Community Hub & Library from and in the central atrium at White Rose Shopping Centre, both 10am-12pm. On Wednesday they are at Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library, 10am-12pm and outside St Matthew’s Community Centre on Holbeck Moor Road from 10:30am-12pm. Finally they will be at Beeston Community Hub & Library on Town Street on Thursday 10am-12pm.

The Middleton Life History Group meets on Wednesday morning 10am–12pm at Trinity Network, Nesfield Road, Belle Isle, LS10 3LG.

You are invited to Go For Gold at Leeds Discovery Centre near Leeds Dock. Find out about some of Leeds’s top sporting heroes at this Olympics centred family workshop on Wednesday 10am-12pm and 1-3pm. Free but booking essential, full details here.

Hunslet Nelson CC are running a three day Enjoy Cricket camp on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Boys and girls aged 6-15 years are encouraged to take part each day from 10am-3pm. Tickets are £10 per day, the club is based at Gipsy Lane, Beeston, LS11 5TT.

Hunslet Community Hub & Library, LS10 2NS, hosts a Hip Hop workshop on Wednesday at 11am. Hello Hip Hop will provide taster sessions in Breakin’ and Graffiti. A pay-what-you-decide family-friendly event suitable for children aged 7+. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Book here

And finally, later on Wednesday, Hunslet Community Hub & Library hosts a drop in consultation session about the new mass transit system’s route through South Leeds from 4-7pm
