What’s On Roundup 29 March – 4 April 2025

Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.

We start this week at Beggars Hill in Beeston, because this weekend Leeds Goes Purple with a host of litter picking events across the city. Join Beeston Womblers and others at the end of Noster Terrace, LS11 8QF at 10am on Saturday morning. Equipment will be provided, but dress for the weather and wear stout shoes.

Onto Rowland Road Club where the new Play Patch is launching on Saturday, 11am-2pm. Yorkshire Contemporary (formerly The Tetley) have worked with the club and local residents to create a safe, playful outdoor space. You’re invited to explore the Play Patch during a fun-filled day of activities including creative workshops for all ages.

Leeds United are at home to Swansea City on Saturday, kicking off at 3pm. You can expect the usual heavy traffic and parking issues around Beeston, Holbeck and Cottingley before and after the match.

Meanwhile, semi-professional South Leeds FC play Brigg Town on Saturday afternoon at South Leeds Stadium, Middleton Grove, LS11 5DJ. The match also kicks off at 3pm.

There’s an unmissable night of entertainment in store at The Holbeck on Saturday evening when Kelly Marie returns as Cher. Go through the decades of all of the Cher Classics with her. Tickets £3 members, £5 non-members, £1 children. The Holbeck is on Jenkinson Lawn, LS11 9QX.

Don’t forget the clocks go forward by one hour at 2am on Sunday morning.

Our second Leeds Goes Purple litter picking event takes place on Sunday at 12pm. Meet Hunslet Tenants and Residents Association and others at The Crooked Clock, Sussex Avenue, LS10 2LF. Equipment will be provided, but dress for the weather and wear stout shoes.

Also on Sunday the Leeds Knights take on the Telford Tigers in the NIHL National League Playoffs. The ice hockey match faces off at 5:15pm at Planet Ice on Elland Road.

On Monday the Hamara Centre hosts a Pop Up Baby Clothes sale, 10am-1pm. You can stay and play with your baby or toddler and find nearly new clothes for children aged 0-3 years. Clothes are free but donations are welcomed. The Hamara Centre is on Tempest Road in Beeston, LS11 6RD.

Also on Monday evening, 6:30-8pm, the Beeston Hill Community Association will be meeting at the Hamara Centre on Tempest Road, LS11 6RD

Stronger Together is a peer support group for parents, guardians and adult carers of children and young people under 25 living with disabilities. It’s holding its monthly meeting at BITMO’s GATE, Aberfield Gate, Belle Isle, LS10 3QH on Tuesday, 11am-1pm.

A new four week Women’s Self Defence course starts on Tuesday, 4:30-5:30pm at the Hamara Centre on Tempest Road in Beeston, LS11 6RD. The course is free, but spaces are limited. To book call: 0113 277 3330, or email: aliya.panjwani@hamara.co.uk.

BasementArtsProject, Beeston’s own art gallery, is holding a preview for its latest exhibition on Tuesday, 5:30-8:30pm. Helen Wood’s show ‘Sphere of Concern / Mirror of Repetition’ presents a series of works highlighting the nature of consumption, material production and the paradox that is the notion of green growth. BasementArtsProject is at 28 Back Burton Terrace, LS11 5JH.

The Middleton Life History Group meets on Wednesday at 10am at the United Reformed Church, Nesfield Road, Belle Isle, LS10 3LG.

On Thursday a new network to support and promote food growing in South Leeds will be launched at Friends of Hunslet Moor Community Hub, Moor Road Beeston LS11 5FN (behind the purple tower blocks). The meeting runs from 12:30-2:30pm and lunch is provided so please book via hello@seasonwell.co.uk

Hunslet Moor Residents Forum will meet on Wednesday evening, 6:30-7:30pm at the Friends of Hunslet Moor community hub, behind the purple tower blocks. Councillors, the Police and other agencies will be there to answer residents questions.

Hunslet Carr Residents Association meets on Thursday, 6:30pm, at Woodhouse Hill Community Centre, LS10 2EF

Also on Thursday, Beeston Community Forum meets at 7:30pm at Beeston Village Community Centre, off Town Street, LS11 8DQ.

On Friday morning Middleton Elderly Aid host their monthly legal advice session from 9:30-11am at their social centre on Acre Road, LS10 4JQ.

There is a Police Contact Point at Cottingley Community Centre on Friday, 10am-12pm. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting.

Would you like to help co-write a Song For Hunslet? Opera North are holding another workshop session on Friday afternoon, 1:30-3pm at Hunslet Community Hub & Library, LS10 2NS.

And finally, we will be distributing our April newspaper to 200 pick up points around LS10 and LS11 from Wednesday onwards so watch out for a copy.
