Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.
This week we start at Elland Road where Leeds United take on Coventry City in the Championship. Kick-off is at 3pm and you can expect the usual heavy traffic and parking issues around Beeston, Holbeck and Cottingley.
Meanwhile South Leeds FC’s semi-professionals will be playing Yorkshire Amateur at South Leeds Stadium, also with a 3pm kick off
On Saturday evening Slung Low present Leeds based duo ACCA Dance Theatre’s ‘Occupational Hazard‘. Fusing comedy, clowning and choreography, Occupational Hazard follows the day in the life of air hostesses Becky and Linda, ACCAirways’ creme de la creme on a low budget airline where casual sexism is normalised. On Sunday you’ll find all sorts of Star Wars characters as the Mos Eisley Misfits return to Middleton Railway’s Star Rails event. There will be photo opportunities, traders and even a landspeeder. 10am-4pm, adults £10, children £5.
At 2pm on Holbeck Moor the Blue Plaque will be unveiled, commemorating the actions of 30,000 Leeds citizens seeing off the Fascist Blackshirts in 1936.
Whilst you’re in Holbeck on Sunday, why not drop in to the Leeds Care Leavers’ Christmas Dinner FUNdraiser event at Slung Low’s Warehouse In Holbeck on Crosby Street, LS11 9RQ. Get an early start on Christmas with decorations, giant cheese board, quiz and even a visit from Mr Claus himself. From 3pm.
The Friendly Band were due to wind up the Friends of Middleton Park’s summer programme on Sunday afternoon, but unfortunately this event has now been CANCELLED when the band pulled out and a replacement couldn’t be found.
Ice hockey fans will be headed down to Planet Ice on Elland Road where Leeds Knights face off against the Bristol Pitbulls at 5:15pm on Sunday.
On Monday evening, 6:30-8pm, the Beeston Hill Community Association will be meeting at the Hamara Centre on Tempest Road, LS11 6RD
BasementArtsProject, Beeston’s own art gallery, had to postpone its exhibition opening last week, so it will now take place on Tuesday. ‘Wintering – Pickling as Art practice’ is by South Leeds-based Bulgarian artist Kristina Nenova. Drop in from 5:30-8:30pm to 28 Back Burton Terrace, LS11 5JH, it’s free and there will be some food and drink.
On Thursday Cockburn School is holding its Open Evening for children in Year 6 and their parents and carers who will be applying for secondary school places to start next September.
Hunslet Carr Residents Association meets on Thursday, 6:30pm, at Woodhouse Hill Community Centre, LS10 2EF
And finally, also on Thursday, Beeston Community Forum meets at 7:30pm at Beeston Village Community Centre, off Town Street, LS11 8DQ.
