Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds.
We start this week with a note from the Council to say all matches due to be played on their grass pitches are off this weekend due to the ongoing wet weather and saturated ground conditions.
On Saturday morning Middleton Woods parkrun will be remembering Roger Burkill, an important and valued member of the local running community, who sadly died recently. The free 5km walk, jog or run starts at 9am from the Leeds Urban Bike Park (LS10 3TN).
If you’d like to grow fruit and veg but don’t know where to start get along to the Belle Isle Community Orchard, behind 58 Belle Isle Circus on Saturday. From 1-2pm there will be free, delicious food and fun, family-friendly activities plus you can find out about all the community gardens in your area, how you can get involved. Then from 2-4pm there will be a workshop showing you how to get started with growing food.
Next to Planet Ice on Elland Road where the Leeds Knights take on the Telford Tigers in the NIHL National Division. The ice hockey match faces off at 6:30pm on Saturday.
On Sunday Opera North bring their family-friendly concert Orchestra Unpacked to Belle Isle. Described at a “treasure hunt with a twist”, singing and moving is positively encouraged. The free show is at BITMO’s Gate, Aberfield Gate, LS10 3QH starting at 11:30am.
Beeston Hill Community Association will be meeting at their new venue Building Blocks Centre on Maud Avenue, LS11 7DD, on Monday evening, 6:30-8pm.
Hunslet Remembered is a chance to reminisce and discuss local history on Thursday from 10am-12pm at Hunslet Community Hub & Library, off Church Street, LS10 2NS.
The Salvation Army hold their monthly Friendship Lunch on Thursday, 11am-1pm at their base on Hunslet Hall Road, LS11 6QB. It’s a warm space with chat and games etc plus a free snack lunch.
There will be a Police Contact Point at the St George’s Centre in Middleton on Friday 11am-12pm. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting.
And finally, on Friday residents of Beeston & Holbeck ward can meet their Councillors at the monthly surgeries: 4pm at Beeston Library on Town Street; 5pm at Slung Low’s Warehouse in Holbeck on Crosby Street; and 6pm at Cottingley Community Centre.
