What’s On Roundup 21-27 September 2024

Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.

We start this week to the The Tetley (LS10 1JQ) where art returns on Saturday with Leeds Indie Market’s Autumn Pop-Up. A diverse array of local independent businesses and creators are offering everything from ceramics and handmade jewellery to clothes and gourmet bakes. 10am-3pm.

Join Leeds Young Archaeologists’ Club as the celebrate their tenth anniversary at Middleton Park Visitor Centre from 11:15am. Find out what they’ve achieved over this year. The Club are particularly keen to see past volunteers, but everyone is welcome.

Then from 1-4pm the Belle Isle Repair Cafe is back in BITMO’s Gate. This month they will be joined by some local community market stalls. Bring your broken things and let the fixers work their magic or drop in and browse the stalls for a gift or sweet treat. There will also be a chat about Belle Isle Gala at 3pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and share ideas to make 2025 even better.

Ahead of the unveiling of a blue plaque commemorating the Battle of Holbeck Moor, there will be a Love Music Hate Racism gig on Saturday, 4-9pm at The Holbeck club on Jenkinson Lawn, LS11 9QX. Tickets are pay what you feel between £3-10.

There’s a new children’s (7-13 years) active play session in Cross Flatts Park every Sunday, 11am-1pm. Physical, nature based and creative play. It’s free, just turn up and join in.

After last week’s torrential rain the inaugural LS11 Yard Sale is back on Sunday from 1-5pm. Residents have signed up to hold a stall outside their home and you can find a map of the stall locations here.

Hunslet RLFC play Midlands Hurricanes on Sunday in the BetFred League 1 Play-off Semi Final at South Leeds Stadium. Kick off is at 3pm, tickets from hunsletrflc.ticketco.events/uk and children under 16 are free.

On Tuesday Vale Circles on Tunstall Road in Beeston (LS11 5JF) is holding an Open Event between 10am-1pm. Drop in to find out more about its services for people with mental heal issues.

On Wednesday afternoon from 3:30pm MHA South Leeds are holding a Social Afternoon at the Tommy Wass pub in Beeston. There will be an entertainer, plus quizzes, raffle and food. Get your tickets from southleeds@mha.org.uk or ring (0113) 271 6201.

Wednesday also sees Middleton Elderly Aid’s Memory Café for people living with dementia and their carers. It takes place at MEA’s Social Centre on Acre Road, LS10 4JQ from 1:30-3pm.

Hunslet Remembered is a chance to reminisce and discuss local history on Thursday from 10am-12pm at Hunslet Community Hub & Library, off Church Street, LS10 2NS.

If you’re child is in Year 6 you should get along to Cockburn Laurence Calvert Academy’s Open Evening from 5-7pm on Thursday. The school is next to Middleton Leisure Centre on Ring Road Middleton, LS10 4AX.

BasementArtsProject, Beeston’s own art gallery, has an exhibition opening on Thursday. ‘Wintering – Pickling as Art practice’ is by South Leeds-based Bulgarian artist Kristina Nenova. Drop in from 5:30-8:30pm to 28 Back Burton Terrace, LS11 5JH, it’s free and there will be some food and drink.

Cottingley community centre hosts a Police contact point on Friday 10am-12pm. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting.

Involve Community Centre are holding table top sale on Friday, 2-4pm. There will be a raffle, cake stall, bric a brac, refreshments available. To reserve a table call Stewart on 07419 776356. Involve community centre is located on Whitfield Avenue, Hunslet, LS10 2QE.

There will be an exhibition of artworks made as part of the Creative Communities project at Hunslet Community Hub & Library, off Church Street, LS10 2NS on Friday from 12:30-3pm.

On Friday residents of Beeston & Holbeck ward can meet their Councillors at the monthly surgeries: 4pm at Beeston Library on Town Street; 5pm at St Matthew’s Community Centre in Holbeck; and 6pm at Cottingley Community Centre.

And finally, Leeds Palestinian Film Festival present a double bill at City Bloc Climbing Wall, Kitson Street, Hunslet, LS10 1NT on Friday evening at 7:30pm. ‘Resistance Climbing’ and ‘Walls Cannot Keep Us From Flying’ show how both climbing and skateboarding in Palestine bring hope and joy in existence and are a powerful tool for resistance and social change.
