What’s On Roundup 16–22 December 2023

Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.

We start this week in Belle Isle where the Repair Café will be returning to BITMO’s Gate Centre, Aberfield Gate, LS10 3QH, 1-4pm. As well as a great opportunity to get things mended by the volunteer fixers, this month the café will also feature the launch of the BITMO Tool Library, a visit from Santa, free winter coats, stalls selling festive crafts and the usual free hot chocolate and toasties.

Also on Saturday Leeds United entertain Coventry City at Elland Road. Kick-off is at 3pm and you can expect the usual heavy traffic and parking issues around Beeston, Holbeck and Cottingley.

On Sunday you are invited to join the Recovery Runners Festive 5k at the Lock keepers house, Armouries Drive, Leeds Dock. You can run, walk, cycle, however you want to do it. Celebrity Ambassadors will be there along with special guests as well as medals, mince pies and refreshments. Please bring your Foodbank donations and a Child’s Christmas gift all to be donated to a local charity.

Leeds Dads will be holding a special Christmas free Soft Play session, 10am-12pm on Sunday morning at Little Angels behind the Tommy Wass pub, LS11 7HL. This is for dads and pre-school children and there’s free tea and toast! Book: leedsdads.org/events

The Friends of Hunslet Moor’s Santa’s Grotto takes place on Sunday afternoon for those who have already booked.

Alternatively you can join the Wandering Nativity, also on Sunday, from 2pm at Church Street, St Mary’s Spire, and then meandering through the estate to the Church of the Nazarene at 3:30pm.

Join the festive storytelling and rhymes for children under 5’s and their families at Santa Story & Rhyme Times with a surprise visit from Santa himself bearing gifts. At Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library, LS11 6PF on Monday 10:30-11:30am; and at Hunslet Community Hub & Library, off Church Street, LS10 2NS on Tuesday 10:30-11:30am.

Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library will also be hosting free a Flu and Covid Vaccine clinic on Tuesday, 10am-4pm. You’re able to have your vaccine if you are: Pregnant; 65 years old or over; Have a long term health condition; Frontline health and social care worker; Aged 16–64 and are a carer; Aged 12–64 and live with someone with a weakened immune system. The healthcare professionals at the clinic will be happy to answer any questions you may have about winter vaccines.

There are three chances to catch up with PCSOs from the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team this week. On Tuesday they will be at Hunslet Community Hub and Library, off Church Street; on Wednesday they will be at Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library; and on Thursday at Beeston Community Hub and Library, Town Street. Each drop in session runs 10am-12pm.

Adventures in Reading is a free book club for children aged 7-11. It will be taking place on Tuesday, 3:30-4:30pm at Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library, LS11 6PF. This is an event to discover great books, share new stories and explore important topics. From book reviews to group discussions to book themed activities, there is something new to try each month. Each free session is bookable at www.ticketsource.co.uk/leedslibraryevents. Accompanying adults do not need a ticket.

A Winter’s Trail is Skelton Grange Environment Centre’s annual winter fundraising event is a magical celebration of light in our darkest month. Wander along a candlelit trail in the woods and gardens at Skelton Grange and catch a glimpse into the secret worlds of the little folk who reside there… Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 4-6:30pm. Leeds Sanctuary invite you to Carols in the Community on Tuesday. Head to Fearns at Leeds Dock to grab a mince pie and a drink, in time to join in singing Christmas Carols along with the University of Leeds Wind and Concert Band from 5.30pm.

The Mobile Community Hub & Library will be parked up opposite Cottingley Towers on Wednesday 10am-12pm.

And finally, on Thursday the Liver Buddies will be parked up at Middleton Leisure Centre, Ring Road, LS10 4AX from 10am-3pm. Drop in for a free liver health check.
