South Leeds Roundup: Friends, Family Fun and Fleetwood Mac

Here’s your regular roundup of what’s making South Leeds tick on other websites, blogs and across Facebook.

Dragonfly Middleton Park
Dragonflies in Middleton Park

There’s lots going on in Middleton Park right now and the Friends group have posted several interesting items on their Facebook page this week. If you’re interested in small mammals, archaeology or wildlife photography do take a look. They also report how Parkswatch and the Police responded to their report of motorbikes in the park and apprehended one rider and confiscated the bike.

There might not be much wind for their turbines at the moment, but the Greenhouse in Beeston doesn’t depend on just one source of energy. This week they are showing off their solar panels, which are soaking up this glorious sunshine and turning it into electricity.  There’s a lovely photo on their Facebook page.

Hunslet Hawks have details on their website of a golf day they are holding to raise funds for their community work. We couldn’t help noticing the disgruntled fans comments on Twitter following Sunday’s loss at Doncaster, let’s hope they do better at Barrow this week.

Friends of New Forest Village are getting excited on their Facebook page as their Family Fun Day approaches. It looks like there will be lots to do and lots of stall at Sunday’s event on the playing fields next to Sharp Lane primary school.

Fans of Ska music should check out Holbeck Working Men’s Club’s Facebook page. The club has Ska gig coming up and advance notice of a family day for the August bank holiday weekend.

The Aire Valley Homes Facebook page is always a good source of information. This week they have lots of news for young people from summer holiday activities through to training and apprenticeship opportunities.

Local food blogger Ewan Mitchell is tackling a new subject. His latest blog is about being a Dad. He has a two year old son and was expecting a second child when his wife tragically miscarried. His account of their emotional journey is very moving.

Another page full of personal insights is Amber’s Autism Awareness. It’s great to hear how she’s progressing at school and interesting to hear how difficult visiting friends can be as she is out of her routine. Lovely post too about her singing Fleetwood Mac: “If I could baby I’d give you my world, how can I when you won’t take it from me .. You can go your own way!”

Rothwell Neighbourhood Policing Team advises smokers to be careful with their tab ends. Hedges and grass are very dry and flammable, not to mention the litter. Their Facebook page also carries a report of a school football tournament involving St. Phillips, Windmill, Middleton, Clapgate, Westwood and Sharp Lane primary schools. The event was organised with support from local business and Councillors with the Police supplying the referees.

The Beeston Broncos Facebook page has lots of photos of the children enjoying the Festival of Rugby League World Cups at Headingley, plus news of their second annual South Leeds Talent Showcase, taking place on Saturday.

And finally some problem solving on Facebook. Over on the Westwood Community Association’s Facebook group there’s advice for member who has had their locks upgraded by the Council, but needs extra keys cutting. The consensus is that CASAC is the cheapest option. They also have photos from their stall at Middleton Gala.
