The South Leeds Music Centre are running their first ever music summer school. The summer school will be run over four Saturdays in August, with each morning having a variety of activities for new and more experienced young musicians to try.
The summer school will run at the South Leeds CLC, on the site of Cockburn High School in Middleton. The mornings will be run by experienced music teachers assisted by young volunteers who are working towards awards in Youth Leadership, the Duke of Edinburgh award and ‘Vinspired’ volunteers’ awards.
The sessions are low cost at just £4.50 for a whole morning of music making. Each session will be made of two 45 minute classes (of the same activity) with a performance at the end of each morning. As each week will be different, young people can try one, some or all of the four week sessions. The summer school will finish with a showcase performance at the last session on the 24th.
Each week there will be an activity aimed at under 12s and an activity aimed at teenagers. The under 12s activities include a trash band, a samba band and a chance to try world percussion. The 12 plus activities include an urban music workshop, a session on song writing and the chance to play in a rock band. There are also options for instrumentalists, with each week having a focus on a different instrument family- strings, woodwind and keyboards, with a mixed instrumental group rehearsal in the final week. All ability levels are welcome at these sessions- from complete beginners to experienced players!
The summer school is funded by the Council’s Inner South Area Committee, and is run by the South Leeds Music Centre.
