Nine months of roadworks in Stourton as water main replaced

Roadworks, lasting until July next year, are due to start on Pontefract Road in Stourton on Monday (20 October 2025).

Yorkshire Water are replacing 1.6km of clean water main between Thwaite Gate and the M1 junction. This scheme is part of the company’s £406m investment to replace over 1,000km of water mains from 2025 to 2030.

Normal working hours on site will be Monday to Friday, 8am-5pm. However, there may occasionally be a need to work over a weekend in order to keep to programme. Furthermore, traffic management will be required (details below) and will be manually controlled between 7am-7pm.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Water said:

“We appreciate how disruptive traffic management measures can be. I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience, and express our gratitude in advance for the patience of all our impacted customers whilst we conduct this significant investment scheme. Please be assured that we shall work as safely and efficiently as possible.”

The works will be split into three phases:

From Monday work will commence between Skelton grange Road and Thwaite Gate. This phase will run until 19 December, temporary traffic lights will be in operation with the junction of Queen Street and Pontefract closed until the end of November.

After the Christmas break work will re-start on 6 January 2026 between Skelton Grange Road and the Intermezzo Drive roundabout. This phase will run until 30 March and again there will be temporary traffic lights in operation.

The final phase of work is scheduled to run from 30 March to 19 July 2026, starting at Intermezzo Drive roundabout and progressing towards Arla. It will be further split into three phases

  •  30 March – 19 April 2026
    One-way road closure in place with access maintained from Junction 44 of M1
  • 20 April – 31 May 2026
    Full road closure in place with access for businesses within the closure being maintained
  • 25 May – 19 July
    One-way road closure in place with access maintained from Pontefract Road towards the M1
