Leeds City Council has unveiled plans for new 20mph zones in the East Granges area of Belle Isle and the Hunslet Green Whitfields estate in Hunslet.
The zones are part of the council’s roll out of 20mph zones across most residential streets in the city and are aimed at increasing road safety. Writing on the Child Friendly Leeds blog a spokesperson for the LCC Highways and Transportation said:
“20 mph speed limits make residential streets safer for all. In those areas of the city where 20 mph speed limits have been introduced, there was on average a 43% reduction in accidents. The number of accidents involving child pedestrians has halved.”
The two schemes will now go to public consultation and if no objections are received the works will be carried out. Between them the two schemes will cost £25,000 to implement.
