Middleton Woods Parkrun hold special event for Roger Burkill

This week’s Middleton Woods parkrun will honour event organiser Roger Burkhill, who sadly passed away recently.

Roger was a regular member of the team on Saturday mornings as well as being was a key member and Run Leader at both South Leeds Lakers and Morley Running Clubs. He was also a passionate trail runner and completed and marshalled many Hardmoors, Ultra Trails and Punk Panther events.

Runners on Saturday from those clubs or who have taken part in these events are encouraged to wear club colours or race t-shirts in Roger’s memory. In addition a minute’s applause will be held before the start of the event at 9am.

Writing on Facebook, Run Director Mark Bowman said:

“Roger was an important and valued member of the Middleton Woods parkrun community and we know he brightened up your Saturday mornings for many a year. We would love you to join us and reminisce about how he touched your lives and it would be great to see as many of you as possible run, jog or walk the course if you are free.

“We look forward to seeing you all on Saturday and giving Roger a proper send off, Middleton Woods parkrun style.”

I would like to bring back a memory I have from when I first joined Middleton Woods parkrun afer completing my 100 parkruns at Cross Flatts.

It was about two years ago and I was met by Roger, Mark and Josh who made me most welcome at Middleton Woods Parkrun and showed me where to marshal from.

I took a few pictures, but it was not long before I was given Admin rights to upload pictures of the run to the Middleton Woods parkrun Facebook page.

I can easy take between 150 to 350 pictures of the run which I edit at home and upload to the site for everone to see and print off if they want to.

Can I please send my condolances to Helen and family. RIP Roger.

Middleton Woods parkrun is a free 5km walk, jog or run in Middleton Park. It takes place every Saturday morning at 9am from the Leeds Urban Bike Park. For more information go to: www.parkrun.org.uk/middletonwoods
