Families are invited to travel back nearly 2,000 years this October half term, as the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds presents Roman Tales — a week of action-packed performances, hands-on activities, and ancient adventures inspired by Roman and gladiatorial life.
Running from Saturday 25 October 2025 to Sunday 2 November, the event is part of the museum’s Gladiators series, linked to the acclaimed exhibition Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum, which runs until 2 November.
The museum’s talented team of live interpreters will deliver six thrilling live shows daily, bringing the world of ancient Rome vividly to life through dramatic storytelling and authentic combat demonstrations.
Highlights include:
• Combat: Gladiators! (Daily) – Witness the clash of two mighty gladiators and decide who wins the fight for glory.
• Combat: Roman v Celt (Daily) – Experience a legendary battle between two warrior cultures, armed with sword, shield, and spear.
• Steel and Stripes – (25–27 & 31 October, 1–2 November) Meet a gladiator and his fiercest four-legged opponent in this drop-in demonstration.
• Androcles and the Tiger – (28–30 October) Enjoy a charming puppet show retelling the timeless Roman tale of friendship and courage.
Families can get hands-on with creative crafts and exploration trails throughout the week:
• Animals of the Armouries Trail – Pick up a free family trail and discover fascinating facts about the animals hidden in the museum’s galleries.
• Craft Activities – Drop in between 11am and 3pm to make your own gladiator helmet or Roman mosaic.
“Roman Tales brings history off the page and into the arena,” said Florence Symington, Director of Brand and Audiences at the Royal Armouries. “It’s an unmissable day out — packed with stories, creativity and excitement. From gladiator duels to puppet shows and crafts, it’s the perfect mix of fun and learning this half term.”
