Recently a gathering took place of the most exclusive club in sport. The Hunslet Ex Parksiders 43rd annual reunion took place and only those that have pulled on the Hunslet jersey at their Parkside ground prior to its closure in 1973 are allowed entry.
That is apart from guest speakers who then become honorary members and can attend subsequent reunions. Past guest speakers have included Lord Merlyn-Rees, Willis Hall and Malcolm Reilly.
This year’s reunion was special as it was the 50th anniversary of their 1965 Wembley appearance and the guest speaker was Ray Ashby, joint Lance Todd Trophy winner with Brian Gabbitas, in what was considered as one of the greatest finals ever.
Brian and Ray exchanged gifts, a Hunslet Wembley tie for a Wigan Wembley jersey. Ken Eyre responded for the association and a vote of thanks was given by Harry Jepson OBE before they retired to the Prospect, Moor Road for further beverages.
