Holbeck art show to open on Saturday

Marshalls Mill has invited 13 local artists to exhibit in ‘The Round Foundry Art show’. The exhibition aims to celebrate the railway heritage of the site, the birthplace of the industrial revolution. The works portray Leeds as a city in all its glory.

In terms of timing, 2025 is the two hundredth anniversary of the very first passenger train in the world, currently being celebrated across the country as ‘Rail 200’.

The Round Foundry was pivotal to that as the first commercial steam train, ‘Salamanca’, was built on the site in 1812 by Matthew Murray and John Blenkinsop. The locomotive was used top haul coal to staithes in the city centre on the Middleton Railway.

The exhibition showcases a diverse range of work from paintings to sculptures, each piece offering a unique reflection on Leeds past, present and evolving identity. Our featured artists explore the city’s industrial legacy and transformation through a variety of creative lenses.

The artists showcased are:

  • Clifford Sted
  • Martyn Hayes
  • Mark Hinchcliffe
  • Johnny Sunter
  • Chrisi Eastham
  • Roy Best
  • Dan Broughton
  • Andy Cahill
  • Adam Stone
  • Stephen Cole
  • Jaydon Rowbottom
  • James Lee
  • Joss Cole

The exhibition will take place in the Dry Sand Foundry building at 103 Water Lane, LS11 5WD. This is one the Round Foundry estate’s Grade II listed character office buildings.

The exhibition opens on Saturday (19 July 2025) 6–9pm, and will then be open daily from 10am-4pm until Monday 28 July.
