Hawks host Lakers for inaugural Hunslet Handicap

On Saturday 3 September Hunslet Hawks played host to the South Leeds Lakers.

The day started with the inaugral Hunslet Handicap and went on to entertain the runners with a great game of rugby between Hunslet Hawks and French team, Toulouse. South Leeds Lakers are a friendly running group for all abilities who meet at Beeston Co-op at 7pm on Tuesdays.

The Hunslet handicap was a group of runners of different abilities running a 5K loop around Middleton Park, starting and ending at South Leeds Stadium. Each runner departed at a time decided by their usual parkrun time, the first runner left at 12.30 and the last at 12.41. This gave even the slowest runner a chance to gain a podium place.

From first to last there was only a time lapse of 6 minutes and 18 seconds.

The top three finishers were, in order, Jean Scopes, John Fielding and Debbie Emsley. Each was presented with a no-expense-spared trophy. For finishing first, Jean also received a gold (effect) medal and a stunning Hunslet Hawks T-shirt.

All who attended were very impressed by the event, organised by Phil Hodgson.

Following the prize giving and rehydration session in the Pheonix bar, the runners, specatators and others made their way up to the top tier to enjoy a cracking game of rugby between Hunslet and Toulouse. The Hawks dominated the game but unfortunately Toulouse had a little luck on their side, scoring in the final two minutes to secure the win. Regardless of the result everyone had a great day.
