It was a day to remember for members of the Hunslet Club as they were delighted by a visit from one of the most famous trophies in world sport – the Barclays Premier League Trophy.
Premier League title sponsor Barclays brought the title prize to the club as part of its new campaign thanking fans, community heroes, players and managers for making the game what it is.
Craig Gilmore, Sports Development Officer at the Hunslet Club said:
“The FA Barclays Premier League Trophy is arguably one of the most famous and sought after trophies in the entire sporting world. To think that millions of people, both sat in grounds up and down the country and on tv across the globe watch 20 teams compete week in week out trying to get their hands on this piece of silverware. It was here, at the Hunslet Club, for the kids to have their photo taken with and be inspired by, who knows, maybe some of them might get to hold again on a pitch when they grow up!”
David Wheldon, Managing Director of Brand, Reputation and Citizenship at Barclays, said:
“This season we want to say thank you to the people who make football and the Barclays Premier League what they are. Young people are the next generation of fans, volunteers in the community and of course professional players, and we want to encourage their enthusiasm and involvement. Our Barclays Spaces for Sports programme offers facilities for all, and we hope seeing the most coveted trophy in English football will inspire them to continue supporting and playing football.”
Barclays Spaces for Sports programme is part of the Barclays Community Investment Programme supporting the communities in which the bank operates. In the UK there are 200 physical Barclays Spaces for Sports sites, which have been developed since 2004 in disadvantaged areas and are often located near to Barclays Premier League clubs. These are managed in partnership with the Football Foundation and are used by over 53,000 people every week. Barclays Spaces for Sports sets out to help young people aged between 10 and 35.
The Hunslet Club hosts two 3G training pitches which were funded by Barclays Spaces for Sport in 2008 costing over £450,000. These continue to be used 7 days a week by hundreds of junior and senior players in South Leeds at a venue which was crowned outstanding Community Sports Club at this years’ Leeds Sports Awards.
New footballers are always welcome to join the Hunslet Club. See here for further details.
