Hunslet RLFC run amok in the sunshine

Hunslet RLFC took an expected two points in emphatic style in the South Leeds sunshine with a 58-6 victory over the South Wales Ironmen.

Aston Wilson scores for Hunslet RLFC

It was the Welsh side who started out strongest and were unlucky not to score early on but for some determined Hunslet defence, Roets being held up over the line.

Eventually though the Hunslet forwards got on top and Normington delivered a deft pass to put Webb over in the corner, the try converted by Sanderson.

Hunslet’s left side became increasingly too hot to handle and from a loose ball Mvududu picked up the ball and carried three men over the line 10-0.

The spaces were now starting to appear and lively halfback Joel Gibson found room to send Jake Normington over for a try, soon after Aston Wilson picked up a loose ball to score to the right of the posts, and it looked like we were in for a one sided romp.

But it was the South Wales Ironmen who had the last laugh in the half scoring and converting a try to make it Hunslet 22-6 South Wales at the break.

The mini revival though was soon put to bed when fans’ favourite George Flanagan scored a hat-trick of tries in less than 20 minutes, the pick of which came from a lovely bit of passing from Nyle Flynn and Joe Sanderson sending Flanagan 30 metres to the line.

South Wales by now were broken and next to score for Hunslet was Joe Sanderson who sliced through for a solo try before Brooke Broughton took a beautiful flick pass from Danny Ansell to score by the posts.

The best was saved until last though as Flynn and Sanderson combined again to send Jake Normington on a romp to the line right on the full time hooter.

On a day when four former Hunslet players were honoured with Great Britain Heritage Numbers (Ginger Burnell, Geoff Gunney, Dennis Hartley and Geoff Crewdson) coach James Coyle said in a post match speech that Hunslet have nothing to fear and were improving with every match. Let’s hope this continues at Keighley Cougars on Good Friday.
