Leeds Federated Housing Association has started work on a new affordable housing development in Hunslet.
The Association is building six new homes at Arthington Place, to replace old, poor quality, back to back terraces which were recently demolished. The site has suffered from fly-tipping near to local shops and the new properties will improve the environment of the neighbourhood, with six new three-bedroom and two-bedroom homes available for affordable rent.
A short ground breaking ceremony was held at the site on Arthington Place by Leeds Federated with local Councillors, Leeds City Council officers, representatives from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and building contractor, Torpoint, to mark the start of building work at the scheme.
The £685,000 scheme has received £122,400 in grant funding from the HCA and is expected to be completed by October this year.
The houses will be built to Lifetime Homes standards, so they will be flexible for tenants through all stages of life, and offer extra security features. They will also be energy efficient and help minimise energy costs and tackle fuel poverty.
Matthew Walker, Leeds Federated’s Chief Executive said:
“We are delighted that work has begun at Arthington Place. The new housing will help to improve the look of the area and provide high quality affordable housing for families in the city.
“We want local neighbourhoods in Leeds to be places people want to live and developments like the Arthingtons are a great boost to the area.”
Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council executive board member with responsibility for development and the economy, said:
“It’s great that work is getting underway. This development will bring about much needed affordable housing for local families and enhance the environment for the benefit of all residents. I’m particularly pleased that these homes will be at an affordable rent and that they’ve been designed so their energy bills will be affordable too.”
Abdul A Ravat, Area Manager at the HCA, said: “This development will make a significant difference to the local community by not only providing new homes but also by removing an eyesore. It is good to see the difference that our partners are making with the help of our investment.”
