Leeds Green Party councillors will tomorrow (Wednesday 10 September 2025) call on the City Council to take steps to beautify mini roundabouts across the city.
The past month has seen a national surge in interest in mini roundabouts, with DIY paintings of the St George flag appearing in hundreds of places across the UK. And Councillor Ed Carlisle (Green, Hunslet & Riverside) – due to speak at the Full Council meeting on this – is keen to see this energy directed into refurbishing these roundabouts city-wide.
Cllr Carlisle comments:
“This unprecedented interest in mini roundabouts is something we should welcome. We believe the Council should push for legal changes to enable us to work with communities, artists, gardening groups, and others, to refresh these previously unloved bits of infrastructure. As long as drivers aren’t distracted, we could turn them into things of beauty, that promote community pride, for very little cost.”
Currently, national legislation (such as the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016) lays down strict rules for the design of road markings – but councils or indeed anyone are entitled to push for laws to be updated and improved.
Full Council meetings – when the 99 councillors of the city meet to debate the big current issues – take place roughly every two months, at the Civic Hall. They are open to the public and are also livestreamed with a recording available to viewfollowing the meeting. Find full details of Wednesday’s meeting here.
