What’s On Roundup 19-25 October 2024

Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds. For full listings go over to our What’s On calendar here.

We start this week with the Belle Isle Repair Cafe, which is back at BITMO’s Gate on Saturday, 1-4pm. This month they will be joined by some local community market stalls. Bring your broken things and let the fixers work their magic. Swap some school uniform or a winter coat. Everyone is welcome for hot drinks and toasties.

Semi-professional South Leeds FC will be playing Appleby Frodingham at South Leeds Stadium, Middleton Grove, LS11 5DJ, kicking off at 3pm on Saturday.

Film Makers For Change will be St Luke’s CARES on Saturday from 6pm, showing work from filmmakers who want to make a difference by telling the stories of seldom heard communities and/or social issues such as poverty, migration, xenophobia, inequality, environment, mental health and war. The event starts at 6:30pm. There will be a 20 minute break included with light refreshments available. Age – this is an event for 12+

‘Alas! Poor Yorick’ is described as “If the Two Ronnies were cast as the Gravediggers in Shakespeare’s Hamlet re-written by Samuel Beckett.” Ridiculusmus are on stage at 7:30pm on Saturday. Like all shows at Slung Low this is pay-what-you-decide. Book at www.slunglow.org/shows. Slung Low’s Warehouse In Holbeck is on Crosby Street, LS11 9RQ.

The Library Story Bus will be pulling in to BITMO’s GATE for Story & Rhyme Time on Tuesday 10:30am-12pm. BITMOs GATE is on Aberfield Gate, off Belle Isle Road, LS10 3QH.

Leeds United take on Watford in the Championship on Tuesday night. Kick-off is at 7:45pm and you can expect the usual heavy traffic and parking issues around Beeston, Holbeck and Cottingley.

On Thursday Holbeck Together host a Memories Café for people living with dementia and their carers. The event at St Matthew’s Community Centre runs from 2-3:30pm.

Light Night Leeds takes place at venues across the city centre and South Bank, including Leeds Dock and The Tetley, on Thursday and Friday nights from 6-10pm.

On Friday residents of Beeston & Holbeck ward can meet their Councillors at the monthly surgeries: 4pm at Beeston Library on Town Street; 5pm at St Matthew’s Community Centre in Holbeck; and 6pm at Cottingley Community Centre.

And finally, rounding off the week, Slung Low present ‘Helios’ on Friday at 7:30pm. Fourthwall transplant the Ancient Greek tale of Icarus into a modern-day myth wound round the winding roads of rural England – and into the everyday living of a towering city.

South Leeds Life is published by a not-for-profit social enterprise. We keep our costs as low as possible but we’ve been hit by increases in the print costs for our monthly newspaper which have doubled in the last two years.
