With over a thousand tonnes of extra black and green bin waste expected to be produced and over a million bins to be emptied, Leeds City Council’s refuse service will be working through the Christmas period to ensure bin collections continue to run smoothly.
The service is only closing on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and News Year Eve, with crews operating throughout the rest of the festive period including Sundays.
So no-one misses out on a collection, collection days will change from Christmas Eve (Sunday 24 December 2023), with those scheduled for Christmas Day being made a day early.
Collections will then take place a day later than usual from Tuesday 26 December until Sunday 7 January 2024, returning to normal from Monday 8 January.

Leeds’ eight household waste and recycling centres, including Holme Well Road, Middleton, LS10 4TQ, will only be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and will otherwise be open and operating as normal, 8am-4pm, including Sundays.
A leaflet setting out bin collection dates for Christmas and New Year will be dropping through letterboxes (or chimneys) from the start of next week.
The leaflet also includes a handy guide showing the many household items that can go into your green bin for recycling – including the extra cardboard packaging, metal drink cans and chocolate boxes that this time of the year brings.
People can check their Christmas bin collection dates at www.leeds.gov.uk/mybinday or get bin reminders straight to their phone by downloading the Leeds Bins app.
