A rare watercolour painting by Leeds artist John Atkinson Grimshaw which hasn’t been on public display in Leeds since 1979 has been bought at auction and is now on display at Leeds Art Gallery. The painting shows the view from Batty’s Wood looking towards St Chad’s Church in Headingley. Grimshaw was born in 1836 and died on 13 October 1893.
His link to south Leeds is that he is buried in Woodhouse Hill Cemetery which is now known as Hunslet Cemetery. There is more information here.
