Louise Megson has been in touch to let us know about an exciting new venture that opens today.
SLATE is opening its second enterprise – a cafe – at Hillside right in the heart of Beeston. From today we will be serving breakfast and lunches and would love to see you come down to support us throughout the week.
In partnership with Tiger 11 and Leeds Federated Housing we now have a cafe and an upcycling project running in Hillside. For any of you who are uninitiated “upcycling” is “recycling” with a twist.
The cafe is run by a team of people from the local area and we have longer term plans for it to become a training kitchen for people with learning disabilities, mental health issues or long term unemployed people. It will also serve the community of Beeston and Holbeck with low cost healthy food and premium coffees, pastries and light bites. We will also be selling quality bric a brac and also some beautiful pieces of furniture.

SLATE, best know for its furniture shop previously at Moor End and more recently on Low Road in Hunslet, has recently become a charity and has 4 key aims:
- Supporting people with learning disabilities to live a productive and meaningful life
- Supporting the environment and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill
- Providing quality furniture to households in the most disadvantaged areas of the city
- Educating the general public around reuse and recycling

Hi Steve – Upcycling is taking a recycled item and “doing it up”, this could be an old wicker chair which may be repainted in pastel colours or identifying vintage items which look great displayed in different way… come down and have a look, in fact bring the Missus as we desperately need some able bodies volunteers who know their way around a cafe…..
Sounds great – must pop along. Community centre cafes are notoriously hard to keep going – I hope SLATE manages to pull it off!
