A planning application has been submitted to build a temporary school building for the new Cockburn Laurence Calvert Academy on land behind the St George’s Centre in Middleton.
The site is currently greenspace, but has never been marked out as playing fields. It will be used for two years whilst the permanent new school is built nearby on the site of Middleton Park High School, recently used as offices by Highways Leeds. The school will be built of a modular construction and after two years the site will be returned to greenspace.
The temporary building will be built in two phases. The first phase will house 210 Year 7 students from September 2021. The building will then be extended to accommodate 420 Year 7 and Year 8 students the following year.
Access to the site will be via the St George’s centre car park, rather than directly off St George’s Road. The plans forecast that over half of pupils will walk to school and a further quarter by public bus, with only a fifth arriving by car. A drop off zone within the school site will be provided as well as parking for staff.
Cockburn Laurence Calvert Academy has been created to accommodate the growing numbers of secondary school age children in South Leeds, it is part of the Cockburn Multi-Academy Trust.
