Talk about the birth of Rugby League in Hunslet

Hunslet RLFC, originally known as Hunslet Northern Union Football Club, were the first club to achieve the feat of ‘all four cups’: Rugby Football League Championship, Challenge Cup, county league (Lancashire League or Yorkshire League) and county cup (Lancashire Cup or Yorkshire Cup).

The photo shows the squad pictured at their Parkside ground with the four trophies that they won in the 1907/08 season.

Rugby League historian Les Hoole will be giving a short, informal talk about those first seasons of Rugby League in the Phoenix Suite at South Leeds Stadium (John Charles Centre for Sport) at 10:30am on Friday 15 November 2019.

Bacon sandwiches will be available at £2 and Les will also have copies of his new book available.

The book, The Northern Rugby Football Union: the birth of rugby league 1895 to 1922,has over 200 photographs of those early seasons of rugby league including south Leeds stalwarts Hunslet and long gone Holbeck. The book also features many other clubs and a full history of the challenge cup from 1897 to 1922. It’s also available direct from the author for £17 post paid email leshoole01@yahoo.com for payment details.
