South Leeds Roundup: Flooring, festivals and ferrets

Here’s your regular roundup of what’s making South Leeds tick on other websites, blogs and across Facebook and Twitter.

We start this week in Holbeck where HEA has been working with Keepmoat to smarten up St Matthew’s Community Centre. Apprentices working on the housing regeneration scheme turned their skills to the centre. They are now looking for someone to help with new flooring.

Beeston Festival has announced it’s moving the festival day to 15 July 2017 to avoid Ramadan.

The August meeting of Beeston Community Forum will be looking at the Beeston Plan and welcome guests from Hyde Park to compare notes on neighbourhood planning. The meeting takes place next Thursday (4 August) at 7:30pm at Beeston Village Community Centre.

As usual there’s lots going on down at The Hunslet Club. Tonight (27 July) the U21 football team host the Leeds United U18s – a chance to see the stars of the future (and Leeds United players too). The Boxing team’s been to Dublin, there have been shows, awards and the Summer Arts programme has been published.

Struggle to find the right phone number for council services? Inner South Community Committee has put together a handy list.

Great community spirit shown by Cross Flatts Parkrun who are bringing brushes to give the park’s playgrounds a good sweep after their 5km run/walk on Saturday.

A new café has open at The Greenhouse in Beeston. Good luck to Ben and all at Elf’s Bar and Kitchen.

Fridays are fun days during the school holidays at Cottingley Community Centre. Sessions start at 11 and cost £1.

Spaces are available at the free writers workshop on Saturday (30 July) down at Slung Low, Holbeck’s own theatre company.

Anyone who been to Old Chapel studios in Holbeck, or any Leeds Music Trust event will have met Beth. She started on a mentoring course four years ago and stayed securing a job. Now she’s leaving to take up a place at University. Good luck Beth!

And finally, it’s nothing to do with South Leeds really, but maybe useful to any ferret lovers out there. The excellent Leeds Reads blog from the Library service often has list of recommended reading. This week the list of books is on ferret keeping.
