South Leeds Roundup: Dogs, Docks and Data

Here’s your regular roundup of what’s making South Leeds tick on other websites, blogs and across Facebook and Twitter.

Middleton Dog Show 14Apparently today is National Dog Day so it seems appropriate to start with the Friends of Middleton Park who have posted some lovely photos from last Sunday’s dog show. The photos were taken by Emma Telford. This week they have a bat walk on Thursday evening (28 August 2014) meeting at 6:30pm and on Sunday (31 August) it’s a history walk taking in Wood Pit and the medieval earthwork that kept Beeston and Middleton apart.

BITMOs GATE used the power of Facebook to re-unite a pooch called Tiny with its owner. They also have information about apprenticeship opportunities and the HUGO bus’ regular spot outside Hunslet Job Centre every Wednesday.

The HUGO bus is soon to be joined by its big sister a converted coach. You can see a sneak preview of its ‘wrap’ on the HUGO Family Facebook page. It’ll be on a street near you soon, Helping yoU Get Online.

We were saddened to hear of the death of John Hodgson this week after a battle with cancer. Hunslet Hawks and Hilary Benn MP both marked his passing. He was a regular at the Hawks and at Beeston Community Forum as well as being an active member of his union, the CWU, and the Labour Party.

Which leads us on to next week’s meeting of Beeston Community Forum which will be addressed by Hilary Benn MP. The meeting takes place on Thursday (4 September 2014) at Beeston Village Community Centre.

We’ve mentioned The White Whale, the new play to be staged at Leeds Dock, a few times. Now The Culture Vulture have interviewed Slung Low theatre’s Alan Lane about the production.

There are changes to some bus services in South Leeds including the 55 and 74. West Yorkshire Metro have the details of the changes which start this weekend (30 & 31 August 2014).

If you think Data is just a Star Trek character you may find a course on understanding ‘Big Data’ helpful. That’s according to friend of South Leeds Life John Baron on his Leeds Bloggers, er, blog. Good enough for me, I’ve signed up.

Lots of pubs in South Leeds have closed over recent years, so we take it as a backhanded compliment that a story in the YEP about the loss of historic pubs mentions four that are still going strong in our area. The newly reopened Garden Gate and Prospect in Hunslet and the The Grove and Adelphi closer to town are all mentioned. Remember folks ‘use them or lose them’.

By the way, well done to The Garden Gate which raised £432.65 for Help For Heroes at its Cider festival and fun day over the bank holiday weekend. Some great photos too.

And finally, Heritage Open Days are coming. This is when we get the chance to peak behind the locked doors of historic buildings. This year Beeston’s own Stank Hall Barn will feature with an open day on Saturday 13 September 2014.
