South Leeds Roundup: desserts, diners and defibrillators

Here’s your regular roundup of what’s making South Leeds tick on other websites, blogs and across Facebook and Twitter.

We start this week with Beeston blogger Mike Wallis. He’s tweaked the Desert Island Discs format and selected five desserts to be stranded with on the mythical desert island. I’m not sure they tell the story of his life but they sound delicious! It’s all on his Backwards Lion blog.

Helen is another Beeston blogger. She’s getting back into running and has set a target for the Leeds 10K. You can find out more on her Hello From Me To You blog including how to sponsor her for Cystic Fibrosis in memory of her friend Carly.

Sticking with running, Amanda Binns has written a great article about South Leeds Lakers’ ‘takeover’ of Cross Flatts Parkrun last Saturday. She highlights how friendly the session is and how everyone is encouraged to do their best. It’s on the Run Leeds website.

Meanwhile the ladies running group South Leeds Sisters marked its fourth birthday with three legged races, sack races egg toss and a buffet tea afterwards.

The Youth Forum at the Hamara Centre in Beeston are opening a Youth Café. Following a successful taster session, the ‘American Youth Diner’ was due to open at 5pm last Friday (6 May).

Beeston Neighbourhood Forum which is working on the Neighbourhood Plan will be holding its AGM on Thursday 26 May. The group are calling on members to attend so that important changes to the constitution can be made.

One lesson from the Hillsborough disaster was the importance of defibrillators. Now Hunslet Warriors are fundraising to get one for their ground.

They seem to have been making hedgehogs down at the Craft Café and very nice they look too. It takes place every Wednesday at the Church of the Nazarene on Hunslet Hall Road.

There’s more crafting at the Belle Isle Family Centre on Wednesday afternoons.

If you’re in Cottingley and need to see someone about housing, benefits or job searches you won’t have to get on a bus – the One Stop Shop is coming to you, well Cottingley Community Centre, every Wednesday starting on 18 May.

Learning Disability Week is coming up in June and you can find details of all the events on the Through The Maze website.

Ladies from 14 years upwards who are looking for a game of Rounders should make their way to Middleton Park Visitors Centre. The informal free sessions run every Thursday 6-7pm.

The new Gipsy Rose Café at South Leeds Golf Club is doing proper afternoon teas and Sunday dinners, but you have to book in advance.

If the international Triathlon coming to Leeds is piquing your interest you might want to check out local opportunities to ‘Go Tri’ the sport. Sessions are running in Middleton Park and at the John Charles Centre for Sport.

Holbeck’s own theatre, Slung Low, are holding a ceilidh (barn dance) on Saturday at their base on Bath Road. As with all their events it’s ‘pay what you decide’.

As the football season draws to a close The Hunslet Club launch their summer 6-a-side league starting on Thursday 19 May.

Meanwhile Middleton Park FC are looking for players from the mini tots up to the under 21 team; sponsors for their first team players and don’t forget their Thursday tea time sessions for girls aged 5-12.
