South Leeds Roundup: Chefs, Champs and Choirs

Here’s your regular roundup of what’s making South Leeds tick on other websites, blogs and across Facebook and Twitter.

We start this week in Belle Isle where the Little Chefs programme at Belle Isle Family Centre teaches children aged 5-11 and their parents to cook simple nutritious meals. The centre’s been looking back at their special Christmas event last Saturday and forward to a new course starting in the New Year.

A couple of interesting events for little ones are coming up at The Tetley art gallery in Hunslet. On Saturday (17 December) the family art workshop will be creating mini petri dish patterns. Then on the shortest day of the year, next Wednesday, Tiny Tetley will be exploring light. You are invited to bring a torch, but also to book in advance.

Last minute shopping to do? The Hunslet Club will be running their Activity Camp next week for children school aged children. As usual there’s lots of activities for boys and girls ranging from football to arts and crafts.

Congratulations to Chloe Picken in year 8 who won The South Leeds Academy’s Christmas card competition this year.

Well done to the six students at Ruth Gorse Academy who presented assemblies about the bullying of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) students.

Meanwhile Cottingley Primary Academy tweeted photos from a class visit to St Mary’s church in Beeston yesterday (Tuesday 13 December).

Also on Twitter, Middleton Railway advise travellers on the Santa Special to bring their camera and enter the photo competition. The winner gets a free family ticket for a 2017 Santa train.

New ‘people powered’ social housing will be built in Hunslet after Leeds Community Homes passed their minimum investment target of £200,000. There’s still time to invest, minimum £100, but hurry the share offer closes on Monday (19 December).

Anthony Crolla, World Boxing Champ, called into Middleton Leisure Centre to meet some of the guys from Pathway 2 Pro this week.

If you’re in Asda on Friday 23rd December please support Charlies-Angel-Centre who will be helping to pack your bags. The Middleton-based charity support families who have lost a young baby.

And finally, Slung Low have added photos from their recent Christmas Fayre. I hear the choir were very good 😉
