September highlights with Slung Low at The Holbeck

As we head towards the beautiful Autumn months we’re busy getting prepared for what promises to be a brilliant season of shows, courses and events here at Slung Low’s HQ: The Holbeck.

First up we’ve got one for all the family with 15 Minutes Live on Saturday 7 September from 2-5pm. Come and join us for a series of new radio plays, performed and recorded live with a full band and foley sound effects.

We have done a series of 15 minutes live with two previously being performed here at The Holbeck but this is our first one created especially for young audiences. Come along and you never know you may even get a starring role and if not you’ll certainly be offered a sarnie or two!

We are super excited to tell you that The Holbeck, the oldest existing working men’s club has been awarded a Blue Plaque to celebrate the extraordinary history of the club and the achievement of all those who have sustained and grown this club which has stood at the heart of the Holbeck community for over a hundred years.

We’d love you to come to the unveiling ceremony from 6pm on Thursday 12 September. We’ve commissioned the brilliant poet Ian McMillan to write a new poem in celebration of the club’s astounding history and we’ll also be joined by the wonderful Commoners’ Choir before we invite everyone for a bite to eat in the club.

If you can make it do let us know so we can make sure we’ve plenty of food: RSVP to theholbeck@slunglow.org.

We’d also like to invite you to become a member of The Holbeck and enjoy a reduction in drinks’ prices, get early notice of events, voting rights at members’ meeting and the knowledge that you are a supporter and member of the oldest club in the country. If you’d like to become a member either visit The Holbeck/membership section of our website (www.slunglow.org) or pop down and let us know.

In the second half of September we have three wonderful plays coming to The Holbeck. On Sunday 15 September at 5pm we have Honey’s Happening; a heart-warming, funny and delightfully interactive show about one woman’s mission to save the world.

Following that the mighty Chris Thorpe brings us his sell-out Edinburgh show Status, a new play in monologue and song about giving up your national identity. Developed and directed by Rachel Chavkin Status is a globe spanning journey of attempted escape, here on Sunday 22 September from 5- 6.20pm.

Our last show of the month sees juggler, water-bender, and part-time deep thinker Robin Boon Dale presenting his award-winning show What Does Stuff Do? Join Robin on Sunday 29 September from 5 – 6pm as he guides you through his mind with a curious combination of circus and philosophy.

As with all of our events please visit our website www.slunglow.org to book your space. All events are You Pay What You Decide.
