Holbeck’s own theatre company, Slung Low, are asking people to support their Christmas Fayre tomorrow (Sunday 6 December 2015) to support their children’s play ‘Emergency Story Penguin’.
The play is an adventure for young audiences. Groups of kids are introduced to the world of the Emergency Story Unit – a secret organisation based in the basement of every theatre that deploys at a moment’s notice to wherever in the world there’s a story emergency. When news comes in of a penguin in peril the audience power the submarine (by song naturally) to Antarctica to save him.
After a successful run last year, the company hoped to tour again, but lost out on funding from the Arts Council.
Slung Low Director Alan Lane explained:
“We’ve decided to present Emergency Story Penguin here at the HUB in Leeds, next spring for a whole week: to schools, young audiences and youth groups. And to do that entirely free to audiences.
“We’re going to concentrate on local, South Leeds schools – areas like Holbeck and Beeston that don’t always get to hear about the city’s theatre.”
Every year Slung Low hosts a Christmas Fayre. A gathering of stalls, hog roast, carol singing and mulled wine it has been a regular point in the calendar to bring together friends and community to celebrate the year and plan the next one ahead.
“This year we’re using our annual Christmas Fayre to start a fund raising campaign to bring free, exciting, adventurous children’s theatre to South Leeds.” Said Alan.
The Christmas Fayre is at the HUB, 67-71 Bath Road, Holbeck from 12-4pm on Sunday 6 December.
