Roundup: Half Term activities for children in South Leeds

Schools break up on Friday (15 February 2019) for the half term holiday. There are lots of activities and events organised for next week across South Leeds. Below you will find details of all the ones we know about, if we’ve missed any please let us know by adding the details in the comments section below.

 

Friends of Middleton Park

Tuesday 19 1-3pm Play session – Multisports for everyone!
Football, Tag rugby, Dodgeball, Boxercise, Circuits and loads more With ACE from Health For All

Wednesday 20 1-3pm Play session – Make your own felted wristbands, headbands and more! Traditional wet felt making -
with Amy from Wild Apple Play

Thursday 21 1pm Family walk for about an hour – come and discover the Park and woods!

All activities start from the Visitor Centre by the lake, off Town Street in Middleton.

 

The Tetley

Sunday 17 Leeds Dads 2-4pm

The free monthly meet up for dads and their pre-school children to play together.

Hunslet’s own art gallery is holding a Family festival of art, dance, music and movement.

Monday 18 Paisley Pattern Pots, 11am-3pm, drop in, suitable for Ages 5+
Inspired by paisley patterns of Indian and Persian origin, play around with some clay and make some pots. Engrave your designs into the clay, and take away your South Asian designs.

Tuesday 19 Bollywood Dance Taster Class with Chiragi, 11am-1pm, free, booking essential.
Try out some Bollywood dance moves in this taster session with Chiragi . With over 20 years in the industry, Chiragi will teach families and children that will sure to impress. Book here.

Wednesday 20 Rangoli Tiles, 11am-3pm, drop in, suitable for ages 5+
Come and join Musarat Raza and create Rangoli tiles inspired by the beautiful patterns of India & Pakistan. Tiles will be made using colourful sand and can be elaborate or simple.  Open to all age groups and abilities.

Thursday 21 Bhangra Dancer with Drummer, 12- 2pm, drop in, suitable for ages 5+
Learn to keep to the beat in our Bhangra Dance workshop. Tohr Panjabian Di Bhangra-Dancers will show you some traditional steps and get you keeping in time with the live drummer!

Friday 22 Saree Tent Making, 11am-3 pm, Ssuitable for ages 5+
Explore, build and play together as a family, using a variety of brightly coloured south asian textiles to create and build a collective tent. Inspired by Arunasalam’s Sri Lankan heritage our fabric selection will include saree material for a sensory play experience for all ages.

Saturday 23 Dancing Shadow Puppets, 11am-3pm, drop in, suitable for ages 5+
Inspired by shadow play in south asian culture we will create dancing shadow puppets , you can take your artwork home and project a colourful silhouette show on the walls!

Hamara Centre

Wednesday 20 at 1pm  There is a free family film showing at the Hamara’s Cinema Club. A responsible adult over 18 years must remain in the cinema room at all times. Juice drink and popcorn only 50p per person.

Skelton Grange Environment Centre

Thursday 21 Bushcraft Day 10am-4pm (8-13 years)

Come and set up camp and spend your day in the woods. We try to vary the activities as much as possible on each session, so the kids can try out new things with each visit. Past Bushcraft events have included: shelter building, fire lighting, campfire cooking, field games, hammock making, wild food walks, wood work crafts, string making, bows and arrows, stalking and tracking, pyro-carving, and charcoal making.

Thursday 21 A Knight’s Journey To The King’s Throne. 1-2pm

Join Explore Learning for this fun English workshop, learning through challenges and activities! This workshop aims to build on and extend some basic grammar and punctuation. For age 7-9 year olds, free event.

St George’s Community Hub, Middleton

Tuesday 19 Robot Workshop 11am-1pm

Drop in and have a go at controlling our humanoid robot. A perfect activity for all ages with the Computer Science team from Leeds City College.

Friday 22 The Art of Tinkering: Invent, Create, Construct 10:30-11:30am

Leonardo da Vinci was an early pioneer of painting, architecture, inventing and the study of all things scientific. To celebrate his 500th anniversary join us for some free half term fun. You will be able to invent, create and construct your own da Vinci-inspired inventions. Suitable for families and children, no booking required.

Leeds City Museum, Millenium Square

Tuesday 19 – Sunday 23 Michael Morpurgo: A Lifetime in Stories 10am-5pm Tues-Fri; 11am-5pm Sat-Sun (runs until 16 June 2019)

Michael Morpurgo is one of Britain’s best loved story makers and this unique exhibition showcases, for the first time, the notebooks and manuscripts that have become the classics we know today, including: War Horse, Private Peaceful, Kensuke’s Kingdom and The Butterfly Lion.

Visitors will have the chance to explore an imaginative and inspiring display of original manuscripts, notebooks, photographs and more. With distinctive areas created around the themes of Michael’s stories, you can step in to the replica of Michael’s ‘creative caravan’, sail away to the Wreck of the Zanzibar and get your wellies on for a trip to Mudpuddle Farm!

Look out for an original handwritten draft of War Horse, along with props from the stage show and film, plus plenty of immersive experiences to let your imagination run wild.

Tuesday 19 Poetry Writing Workshops for young people aged 11+ 10:20am, 11:20am and 1:20pm

The Human Aquarium

Friday 15 – Thursday 28 February 2019 at St John’s Shopping Centre

The Human Aquarium is a free, family friendly and thought provoking, interactive event. Our volunteers will engage with the public and discuss these hot topics, present sustainable alternatives and provide opportunities to learn about more ethical choices.
