Postal workers call for protest support

Following our report on Tuesday that Royal Mail plans to press ahead with the closure of Holbeck Delivery Office, the postal workers union has called a protest, to take place on Saturday (17 February 2018) on Holbeck Moor.

Chris Allen from the Communication Workers Union (CWU) which represents the staff at Holbeck said:

“Royal Mail, why have you blatantly ignored the 16 very good reasons why Holbeck Delivery Office should not be merged with City Delivery Office? You’ve answered none of them.”

Residents of LS11 who will be affected by the changes are urged to support the protest which starts at 2:45pm.

The proposed changes would see the office on New Princess Street in Holbeck close and operations move to a site on the far side of the Armley Gyratory system, off Wellington Road.

Leeds Central MP Hilary Benn commented on Twitter:

“Shameful decision which is bad news for customers. Royal Mail have simply not listened to the objections they received from the local community and from CWU”

He was joined by Cllr Angela Gabriel in urging people to support the protest.
