On The Beat: Enforcing the lockdown and fighting crime

Since the last time I wrote an article South Leeds and policing South Leeds has changed significantly.

As I write this we are in the middle of the second period of lockdown and we are all experiencing a number of challenges both personally and professionally. As you will be aware the current government restrictions are in place until Thursday 7 May when they will be reviewed.

Whilst these are discussed frequently on the news and through other forums if anyone would like any further information on these restrictions please visit www.gov.uk.

Since the restrictions were introduced my Neighbourhood Policing Team and wider policing colleagues have been working hard to ensure that people adhere to these restrictions, ensure that we keep the public safe and protect the NHS.

Our officers are deployed on pro-active patrols across the hotspot areas to be visible to the public and I am pleased to say that the vast majority of people are adhering to the guidance and as a result saving lives, so thank you.

In line with National Police Guidelines my team have adopted a four phase approach. These ensure that we engage, explain and encourage people to comply with the regulations. Enforcement will be our last approach, and whilst there have been times where we have needed to resort to enforcement across the city the vast majority of cases have been dealt with without this requirement.

The community spirit is as alive as ever in South Leeds. I have been so impressed by all the key workers delivering vital services and most importantly the volunteers who are donating their time to look after the vulnerable and those in need.
West Yorkshire Police and working hard with partners to keep residents of South Leeds safe and there are lots of volunteers that are playing a massive role in this.

Thank you and well done to all those involved in this team effort.

Lucy Paris

As a team, we have been overwhelmed by the level of support we have received by members of the public. Recently a local young resident from Middleton, Paris Gill contact us to say that she had drawn us a lovely picture which we have collected and it is being proudly shown at Elland Road Police Station! Thank you Paris.

On a positive note, crime in South Leeds has fallen over the past four weeks. Despite all the challenges we are facing, we are working hard, round the clock, to keep you safe. If you are the victim of crime then please ensure that you report this to us using the appropriate reporting method via phone or online.

We are continuing to take pro-active action when criminal offences or anti-social behaviour is taking place. Over the past few weeks have had some excellent results where nuisance bikes, that are believed to have been engaged in drug dealing, have been located and seized.

I would like to end by saying I hope that each and every one of you and your families are keeping well and you are staying safe. Thank you for helping the NHS and allowing them to continue the outstanding work that they are doing to save lives. I wish you all the best.
