New youth theatre company opening in Middleton

Chris Singleton is a spoken word and theatre artist, aged 30, who has just opened a social enterprise company called Brave Words. It is a local youth theatre company based in Tenants Hall, Middleton.

Chris is the Artistic Director and wants everybody to be able to access and enjoy theatre regardless of age, social class, learning disabilities, gender, culture or financial health. He has set up the theatre company in Middleton, where he currently lives – but has ambitions to set up theatre companies in East, West and North Leeds within the next 3 years.

As a child, he studied drama but said he was always “scared of learning scripts”, and “mental blocks stopped me from acting”. He now hopes to use his own experiences to help build confidence in youngsters across south Leeds.

The South Leeds Youth Theatre is accessible to everyone aged 5-18 years living in south Leeds, and Chris also has limited bursary places for those who want to act but have financial barriers or a low income.

It starts on Tuesday 23 April (2019), then will run every week after that – at Tenants Hall, on Middleton Park Avenue. Sessions are £4 a week, or £40 for a term of 12 sessions. Sessions will run as follows: 4.30pm – 5.15pm, five to seven year olds; 5.30pm – 6.30pm, eight to eleven year olds; and 6.45pm – 8pm, twelve to eighteeen year olds.
