Middleton Railway raises money for Marie Curie

This year Middleton Railway has chosen to partner with Marie Curie for their charity weekend event happening on May Bank Holiday weekend.

The event, which is happening on Saturday 4, Sunday 5 and Monday 6 May, will start at 10am and finish at 5pm. The railway will also be running “Driver for a Fiver” where children will get the chance to become a driver of a train for just £5. Money from this and also a tombola will be donated to Marie Curie.

Steam trains will run on all three days, and the normal timetable will apply.

The Middleton Railway is the world’s oldest continuously working public railway. Founded in 1758, it is now a heritage railway, run by volunteers from The Middleton Railway Trust Ltd.

Ian Smith, Vice President, said:

“We’re thrilled to be supporting Marie Curie at our fun weekend. As organisers, we feel very strongly and passionately about the care Marie Curie provides to people suffering a terminal illness. Given the charity supports a range of illnesses such as dementia, cancer, motor neurone disease and heart failure, its reach within the local community is far and wide. We hope that partnering up with Marie Curie will not only help raise a significant amount of money to go towards the wonderful work they do, but also increase awareness of the charity.”

Faye Cryer, Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie added:

“Chances are, we all know someone who’s been affected by a terminal illness. And it’s heartbreaking that not everyone gets the care and support they need to live their final days with dignity, in the place they want to be. Our nurses care for people in their own homes, providing one-to-one care overnight and support for family members. And we’re always here with expert information, guidance or just a shoulder to lean on.”

Throughout Yorkshire last year, Marie Curie raised more than £250,000 and in 2019 the Charity is hoping to raise over £285,000 from a range of different fundraising activities. Given that one hour of care costs £20, it’s imperative that we work together to raise funds for such a worthy cause to help ensure more terminally ill people get the care and support they deserve.”

Marie Curie relies on the support of local people and is calling on more individuals to get involved so the charity can continue caring for people living with a terminal illness.
