Me and Holbeck in Bloom

Here’s another entry for the St Luke’s CARES Community Awards has been submitted by Holbeck In Bloom, the volunteer community gardening group. For details of how YOUR community group can enter please click here.

I have been treasurer for Holbeck in Bloom for over six years now and in that time we have done planters on Old Elland Road and in the Tilburys and also outside St Matthew’s community centre. We have two rockeries: one near the Ingrams and one just over the footbridge over the railway in Holbeck that need our attention time and time again.

We created a history walk that is called the Matthew Murray History Trail which starts at the corner of Holbeck Moor leading into the city center which takes you past some very interesting buildings such as the Holbeck Viaduct, Temple Mill and Tower Works plus the very elegant old Holbeck Library on Ninevah Road.

We have entered the Yorkshire in Bloom awards where we get judged twice a year for the work we have done and how we have involved the community and businesses. We are now looking to put in some more raised beds so it’s easier for children and the disabled to help out in any way they can, even if it’s just for a little while. We are also going to put in two wild flower meadows and a bluebell wood into our area. One wild flower area will be at the bottom of the moor near the underpass and the other will be at the other side of the motorway near the bowling greens. Our bluebell wood will be behind St Luke’s primary school.

We are also putting a new sign on the Moor. The letters are two feet high, steel, with photographic images mounted on them. If we win an award, we would use it to more signs up around the area to help build community pride.

We are looking for more people to come and volunteer with us. It’s very rewarding to see what you can do to help make an area look and feel better.

If you would like to come along and join our group we are on Facebook we advertise when we meet and where.

Last you we got awarded Gold by Yorkshire in Bloom. Come and help us see if we can do that again this year.
