Kidacre Park residents raise funds and awareness

Members of the charity Leeds Gypsy and Traveller Exchange (GATE), and residents of Leeds’ newest Gypsy and Traveller site Kidacre Park in Hunslet, yesterday (1 August 2019) took part in a sponsored run around Temple Newsam. Men and women of all ages and all abilities turned up to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, selecting either a 1k or 5k route.

Members raised over £300 for the charity, but that wasn’t the only reason why people attended. Mags Price a community member who also works at Leeds GATE said:

“Cancer is still the ‘C word’ for a lot of members of the Gypsy and Traveller communities, we have lost people very dear to us too young and one of the reasons why we are doing this today is to encourage people to go for screening and report any signs and symptoms early.”

Jo Jo Lowther a volunteer on the day said:

“Its good to get men involved, we need to spread the message across the whole of the community.”

Residents of Kidacre Park will also be running a fun day on site, activities for young people will happen alongside more awareness raising and fundraising activities. Residents hope that they can add to the total already raised for Macmillan Cancer care.
