Join the active elders at Trinity Network

Trinity Network has been providing opportunities for older people in South Leeds to get together and remain active for thirty years.

Trinity Network 1

Originally set up by the South Leeds Team Ministry they now operate from their community centre next to Belle Isle United Reform Church on Nesfield Road and from the hall at Dewsbury Road United Reform Church.

I visited and spoke to Lynda Williamson who manages the Network.

“Trinity Network is about friendship, keeping in touch and keeping active as you get older. Life doesn’t have to stop when you reach retirement, in fact it’s the perfect time to explore new avenues.

“The Network is a real social lifeline. Too many older people stay in their home, but you don’t have to. Come and have lunch with us and find out what’s on offer.”

There’s plenty to do, no matter what your interests. Join the gardening group, or keep fit and active with the chair-based gentle exercise group or try line dancing, salsa or tai chi. The staff are always looking for new activities so tell them what you would like to do. If you are not ready to join an activity, there is always a cup of tea on the go and someone to chat with.

Trinity Network 2Isolation is a real problem for people as they get older. Lynda told me about one woman who lived alone, her family were not local and she was close to suicide. A social worker brought her along to the Network and now she goes nearly everyday.

Although many of the members are at the younger more active end of the age range, perhaps newly retired, as people get older dementia can be an issue. The staff are trained to deal with people suffering from dementia. They run a regular ‘Reflections Café’, it’s open to all but particular caters for people with dementia and their carers.

A hot lunch, cooked in the centre’s kitchen, is provided daily through the week. The meal is followed by the ever popular bingo sessions. Bingo nights are also organised for carers, usually the children of older people who can also feel isolated. The Network also rus trips to the theatre and opera, as well as shopping and seaside trips.

With such a range of activities, help and advice, there really is something for everyone.
