Throughout Hunslet and Riverside Ward, it has been a priority of ours as Councillors to invest in our community parks and playgrounds over the last year.
With successful schemes underway at Trentham Park, planned improvements at Brickfields and Rowland Road Park due to start, and funding allocated for future improvements at Hunslet Lake and Pepper Road Parks, and on Hunslet Moor, the only current public play area owned by the Council remaining untouched in the ward was Church Street Playground, located opposite the Penny Hill Centre in Hunslet. But not anymore!
I’m happy to announce a £50,000 investment for this local playground has been secured, which subject to planning permission, will completely revitalise this local asset. The funding is made up from a central government grant worth £25,000, a grant from the Housing Advisory Panel worth £2,000, with the remaining £23,000 funded by us as local Councillors from our devolved budgets.
Plans for the upgrades are still being drawn up, but the hope is to make the playground bigger, with more play equipment if planning permission is granted. There will also be resurfacing work to the paths and play areas, plus new floor markings.
We hope our ambitions can be achieving, subject to planning permission, but at the very least, the playground will be brighter, cleaner and safer for the local children who use it, and it will be a nice compliment to the greenspace to its rear and the new Hunslet Community Hub across the road.
